Contrast therapy & how it works

Step 1. Shower off & suit up

Showering off (with soap!) is required to cleanse the body of fragrances, sweat, yuck, etc. This improves the communal experience and maintains the cleanliness of the bathhouse.

Step 2: Sweat it out in the sauna

At Sauna House we offer multiple communal saunas designed and manufactured by our millwork team in Asheville NC. We keep them at slightly different temperatures and humidity levels. Designs range from light, inspiring, and social to dark, intimate, and moody.

The idea? Find balance in opposites—a Sauna House slogan that's core to our ethos.

Step 3: Cool down with a cold shower & plunge

Step into a shower and rinse before entering the cold plunge. Showing is central to bathhouse etiquette. Rinsing away sweat keeps the cold plunge clean and inviting for all.

The cold plunge can be a shock for first-timers. We encourage you to reclaim your breath during this portion of the circuit with easy 5-in-5-out breath counting. Try spending 3-5 minutes in the cold plunge, but always listen to your body. Our larger bathhouses have multiple plunges ranging from 45° - 55°F.

Step 4. Relax, rehydrate, repeat

Recharge on our stone-cast heated furniture from Galanter & Jones. Make sure to give your body some much-needed hydration - we have water bottle filling stations along with tea, kombucha, sparkling beverages, and electrolyte mixes to enjoy in between circuits.

We recommend lounging for as long as you’d like. Repeat the Hot/Cold/Relax circuit for the remainder of your two-hour bathhouse visit.

Make time to take time

It’s more than just a feeling - contrast therapy is proven to help heal your body & mind.

We’re getting our facts from the experts. We’ve asked Dr. Christine Krall to weigh in on some contrast therapy benefits, below. You can also reference her cited research studies related to metabolism, immune system, recovery and pain, cognitive function, anxiety and cardiovascular health.

Recovery & Pain

When you’re in the sauna, your body prevents your core from overheating by directing more blood to your limbs. Increased blood flow drives oxygen deeper into muscles and joint tissue which shortens the time it takes injuries to heal and increases the body's ability to recover from athletic performance. It also soothes aches and chronic pain.

Cognitive Function

Sauna sends richly oxygenated blood to the brain to improve cognitive functions. Regular sauna use reduces the risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other forms of mental decay, potentially by reducing inflammation and the inflammation markers linked to these specific illnesses.

Anxiety & Depression

Cold water immersion sends huge electrical impulses from your peripheral nerve endings up into the brain. This alleviates symptoms of anxiety and depression and improves alertness, focus, and cognition. Regular cold water use has existed for centuries and is one of the best holistic ways to treat anxiety and depression.

Cardiovascular Health

As the body’s most vital organ, it’s important to keep our cardiovascular system strong and healthy. A study out of Finland found that frequent sauna sessions substantially reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Healthy Skin

The hot air and moisture of a sauna enhance collagen production to help rejuvenate your skin's elasticity and complexion. The heat increase also allows your skin to shed dead skin cells and sweating cleanses the skin, flushing out all the bad stuff in pores and increasing blood circulation for nourishment. You’ll find that your skin feels and looks healthier and is less prone to acne, blackheads, and other pesky blemishes.

Metabolism

Cold exposure reworks the fat cells in your body. White fat is storage, while brown fat is metabolic, and cold plunge encourages stem cells to form brown fat which will increase your resting metabolic rate, meaning you’ll burn more calories in a rested state.

Immune System

Cold water immersion lowers heart rate, constricts blood and lymphatic vessels, and shunts blood back to your core to maintain its temperature. This sends oxygenated blood to your internal organs and pumps lymph fluid through nodes, flushing out waste and triggering white blood cells to destroy foreign bodies. Also read as: naturally boosted immunity.

Technology Detox

Disconnect from technology and reconnect with yourself. Constant use of screens and media has made a major impact on our collective mental health. Leave your phones behind and enjoy an intentional conversation with old friends, the opportunity to make new friends, or take time to connect with your breath and reflect inward.
This place is AMAZING!

I went on a fully booked Monday morning and it was peaceful and quiet the whole two hours. The whole place is really clean, has great feel, and the staff is super friendly.

What a beautiful space!

The staff is so friendly and the experience left me thirsty for more.

Clean, welcoming, and a wonderful facility.

While Hot, Cold, Relax treatments are relatively new in the U.S., this place makes it feel completely accessible.
